Whether you’re heading overseas or camping down south this Easter, going away on holiday is always an exciting time.

Planning for your trip can be a lot of fun; researching your destination, booking tours, checking out the weather and choosing what clothes to take.

However, there are also a lot of things to organise around the home to make sure that everything is looked after while you’re away.

It’s no secret that home burglaries are on the rise. In this financial year alone we have seen an 11 per cent increase in home contents theft claims.

We decided to ask our members what they did to secure their home and valuables before going away on holiday.

Many of our members said they secured their home with impression management; making it look like someone is at home when they’re not. While it’s a great idea, it’s also worth noting that there are some things that we do to give the impression someone is home that can actually have the opposite effect.

According to a recent Australian Institute of Criminology (AIC) report, burglars are aware of attempts to make a home appear occupied, such as leaving lights, televisions or radios on for hours at night, as it’s often a signal of an empty home.

Plus, mail building up in the letterbox or rubbish bins left out on the street can be a clear sign that you’re not around.

So we recommend setting up timers so that you can set your lights to turn on and off at realistic hours. It’s also a good idea to recruit friends or family to house sit, and neighbours to water your plants, put out the rubbish bins and collect the mail.

The AIC report also revealed that home alarms were the second biggest deterrent to burglars after barking dogs with almost 50 per cent of burglars stating that working home alarms were an effective deterrent.

Fourteen per cent of our surveyed members said they protect their homes with alarm and security systems when they’re away.  If you haven’t already thought about installing a home security system, it’s worth considering and you may even receive a discount on your home and contents insurance premiums.

So if you’re planning to go away on holidays, help keep it stress free by using our travel checklist to make sure your home is protected while you’re away.
