SwanCare Group was originally established in the early 1960’s as Swan Cottage Homes. Five decades on, they have established themselves as one of the leading providers of accommodation for older Western Australians. SwanCare Group has built on the foundation of providing affordable accommodation that is safe and secure, while still allowing people to socialise and feel like they are part of a community.

To support social activities and community involvement SwanCare resident volunteers take residents out for a range of activities. These include trips to Kings Park, attending the Town of Victoria Park concerts, Penhros College School productions, Diners Club dinners at local restaurants, theatre-goers performances at the Tivoli Theatre, annual trips to see the Perth Christmas Lights and the Royal Show.

To ensure excursions are carried out safely all SwanCare registered volunteer bus drivers were put through their paces at the end of August. They participated in a driver training session, funded through the RAC Community Sponsorships program.

The training was undertaken at RAC DTEC, located at the Perth International Airport. The comprehensive training included techniques for safer driving in a variety of different sized vehicles, dynamics of larger vehicles, handling in wet and dry conditions, braking and reversing, and basic maintenance to ensure vehicles are kept in a safe condition.

Graham Francis – SwanCare CEO:

“The training provides an assurance that the volunteer drivers are able to operate at a level that is safe and suitable for the buses that they are asked to drive. The bus driving role is extremely important and without this essential volunteering service we would not be able to transport our residents to various functions, events and community outings. The hazard control vehicle was a huge hit – thank you to the trainers for allowing the drivers to experience this. The braking was also good to experience but will hopefully not have to be put into practice.”
