Lee Watts was the lucky winner of April/May 2015 Horizons Magazine major competition – Win a Borneo Adventure in Sarawak, Malaysia.  Flying into Sarawak’s capital Kuching via business class airfares with Malaysia Airlines, Lee and his partner Stacey enjoyed 7 days of adventure. Lee shares his favourite moments.

We had an amazing view of Sarawak’s capital city, Kuching from our hotel room at the Pullman Kuching Resort. The first night we were there was their Independence Day so we could see fireworks from our window, and we also found out the Prime Minister of Sarawak was staying couple floors above us!

Kuching is know as the ‘City of Cats’ and there were cat statues everywhere as we found out when we took part in the city and museum tour. The museum tours were excellent and we had a great guide.

We enjoyed the river cruise at sunset with traditional dancers from the different native tribes. Such a nice way to see the city.

The food in Sarawak was amazing! Midin is the native fern salad that seemed to be served with every meal. We weren’t sure of it at first but it grew on us after a few times. The seafood was fresh and delicious; every meal contained 4 or 5 dishes. It was great.

We saw the Orangutans at the Semenggoh Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre – such a great conservation project. They are semi-wild. It was pretty cool to see these guys hanging out.

The Borneo Highlands Resort was a beautiful escape which really bought back to basics. A massage and soak in the hot pool watching the mountain mist roll through was bliss. Everything there was a photo opportunity.  At the highlands lookout we had one foot each in two different countries; Malaysia Borneo and Indonesian Borneo. It felt like time stood still.

Back in Kuching, we stayed at the Damai Beach Resort where the weather was lovely and the resort was fantastic. We did a tour of the cultural village, which is a living museum of the different tribes around Sarawak Borneo. We got to blow blow darts, see their way of living, listen to their traditional music and play games. Bernard, our guide throughout the week was excellent he explained everything with great passion and this added to whole experience.

All in all it was great trip one Stacey and I will never forget and would definitely do again. Oh I forgot to mention how good flying business class with Malaysia Airlines! Wow the service was excellent the flight comfortable, we really enjoyed the experience. Thank you RAC Travel, Malaysia Airlines, Sarawak Tourism board, our guide Bernard and everyone else involved.

Kind regards, Lee Watts
