This announcement has been welcomed by the WA Motorcycle Riders Association, who have been advocating for a trial to allow motorcycles to use bus lanes even during peak periods. This initiative has been successful in the Eastern States and overseas and contributes to increased safety for motorcycle riders.

Minister Dean Nalder announced a trial starting on Monday 2 March 2015 and said that:

“Motorcycles and taxis will be allowed to travel in selected bus lanes for a 12-month trial period.  The two trial sites chosen are Beaufort Street bus lanes between Roe Street in Northbridge and Grand Promenade in Inglewood, as well as along South Street between Vahland Avenue to the Kwinana Freeway.”

This trail will be evaluated to ensure the safety of all road users is not compromised and that the initiative does not impact on bus times.
