The RAC has announced its partnership with the City of Albany to commemorate 100 years since Australian and New Zealand troops departed King George Sound in Albany for the First World War.

RAC Executive General Manager Pat Walker said the announcement was made at the RAC’s annual Gold Life Morning Tea, a special member event which acknowledges RAC members with 50 years’ continuous membership.

Mr Walker said the RAC was proud to support Anzac Albany, and the RAC’s 109 year heritage made it a perfect fit for such an iconic and historically-important event.

“The RAC has been part of the lives of Western Australians since 1905. Being part of the Anzac Centenary commemorations provides our members and the community with the opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices made by so many brave troops and all those touched by war, and to help pass the baton on to our younger generation,” Mr Walker said.

“RAC members supported the war effort by purchasing two ambulances for the Red Cross, and transporting injured troops from Fremantle Port to hospital using their own vehicles.

“As an official Presenting Partner we are able to give back to our members and the community through Anzac Albany, through supporting the events volunteer program, and a dedicated public transport network over the weekend.”

As part of the partnership, RAC members will have exclusive access to book limited temporary accommodation at the Centennial Campgrounds supported by the RAC, offering powered and non-powered sites suitable for tents and caravans.

The campground is a short walk from Albany’s main street and Anzac Albany events, and a shuttle-bus service will also transport people around town.

The Centennial Campgrounds supported by the RAC will be available for RAC members to stay at between 30 October and 3 November.

The City of Albany is expecting 40,000 visitors from Perth to attend the four-day event, and visitors are strongly encouraged to plan in advance and book accommodation to avoid disappointment.
